Establishment of “Tamura × Tohoku Univ. Advanced Power Electronics Co-creation Research Center”

Tamura Corporation ("the Company") and Tohoku University ("the University") have jointly established the “Tamura × Tohoku Univ. Advanced Power Electronics Co-creation Research Center” at the University’s Material Solution Center*1 (“MaSC”). The Co-creation Research Center aims to drive research and development of innovative materials, components, devices, and modules that contribute to creating new value in the power electronics market.

Location: Material Solution Center of Tohoku University
The University is conducting cutting-edge research and development in next-generation power electronics technologies, including wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor power modules, advanced electronic components, packaging integration, and magnetic materials. Meanwhile, the Company develops, manufactures, and markets a wide range of power electronics-related products, such as bonding and insulation materials, magnetic passive components*2, current sensors, and high-voltage gate drivers.
The two parties are jointly advancing research and development aimed at creating novel magnetic passive components, differentiated at the material level, that support high-efficiency, high-power, and high-frequency operation compatible with WBG semiconductors.
In April 2024, the Sendai Advanced Lab was established within MaSC, where integrated efforts are being made—from material development to performance evaluation aimed at real-world application—with the goal of commercializing next-generation magnetic passive components and related products around 2030.
The newly established “Tamura × Tohoku Univ. Advanced Power Electronics Co-creation Research Center” goes beyond the framework of individual joint research projects. It aims to fully leverage the resources of the University to generate core technologies for next-generation power electronics.
As part of this initiative, the Co-creation Research Center will focus on the following three key areas:
- Strategic planning for marketing and core technology development of materials, devices, and modules with a view to future social implementation.
- Exploration and promotion of research and development themes.
- Engagement of young researchers in joint research activities and development of advanced R&D talent, including working professionals pursuing doctoral degrees.
By integrating the Company’s core technologies in power electronics with the comprehensive expertise of the University, the Co-creation Research Center aims to accelerate research and development of materials, devices, and modules. Through this collaboration, the Co-creation Research Center seeks to create new value in the power electronics market and contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society.

- *1)MaSC, which was established in January 2014, is a cooperative base between academics and private companies with the help of government, which aims to promote the development of new-functional materials for industrial use and to boost up the local economy in Tohoku region. MaSC has been set up in a joint effort of Tohoku University and its four institutes: Institute for Materials Research (IMR), Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advance Metals (IMRAM), Institute of Fluid Science (IFS) and Research Institute of Electrical Communication(RIEC). The construction fees are partly supported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
- *2)Passive components refer to electronic parts such as transformers, coils, capacitors, resistors, and inductors that consume, store, or release externally supplied energy.
